What is the Story?
This
day is named after the famous Catholic priest whose name was St. Valentine. He
was from Rome in third century AD. At that time, there was an emperor called
Claudius II. During his rule, young soldiers were prohibited to marry women. It
was believed that married soldiers could not fight bravely and strongly in a war
because they might afraid of what would happen to their families if they died.
Valentine did not find it fair.So he started solemnizing marriages of young
people secretively. But when emperor Claudius came to know about this act, he
got very angry and ordered to capture and throw him in jail.He was tortured
severely there.
There
was a man named Asterius who was one of the men who had to judge him in line
with the Roman law at that time. His daughter was blind. But Valentine used to
pray and healed her miraculously. This left a deep impact on Asterius who
embraced Christianity after such astonishing healing effect. But something
unexpected happened. Valentine fell in love with Asterius's daughter. Before
his execution,Valentine expressed his feelings of love for her which came to
know when he sent his love letter to her by signing off "from your
Valentine".
In
269 AD, he was sentenced to death. Actually, his execution was in 3 parts:
1.Beating
2.Stoning
3.Decapitation
Thereafter
his martyrdom was honoured by Catholic church by celebrating Valentine's day in
his name.
